As the NFL Draft draws closer, the spotlight is squarely on Colorado stars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.
While Hunter continues to rise up draft boards, drawing near-unanimous top-three pick projections, his longtime teammate and friend Shedeur Sanders has seen his stock take a puzzling dip. For Hunter, the explanation is simple.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated published April 16, Hunter pushed back against the narrative that Shedeur Sanders is sliding for football reasons. Instead, he believes there’s a deeper bias at play.
“It’s just hating. They dislike Coach Prime, so they’ll try to take shots at us,” Hunter said, referring to their high-profile head coach, Deion Sanders.
Hunter, who has wowed NFL scouts with his two-way versatility and elite athleticism, has little doubt about Sanders’ abilities as a quarterback. The two have played side by side for three years, starting at Jackson State in 2022 before following Coach Prime to Boulder in 2023.
Their bond extends beyond the field-Hunter sees firsthand the leadership, poise, and skill Sanders brings to the huddle.
“A lot of people are going to make a mistake if they pass him up,” Hunter added. “They’re not seeing the full picture.”
Colorado honor their stars as NFL dreams inch closer
Under Shedeur Sanders’ command and with Hunter playing ironman football on both offense and defense, the Buffaloes posted a 9-4 record in 2024-the program’s best finish since 2016. The turnaround caught the attention of college football fans nationwide, and both players became household names in the process.
This Saturday, Colorado will immortalize their contributions in a special spring game ceremony by retiring their jersey numbers-No. 2 for Sanders and No. 12 for Hunter. It’s a rare honor for active players, underscoring just how transformative they’ve been for the program in just two seasons.
