Tirso Ornelas is on the verge of his big-league debut. The San Diego Padres recalled the outfielder from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday, placing Jason Heyward on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding roster move.
Ornelas is the Padres’ 12th-ranked prospect, according to The Athletic’s Keith Law. The 25-year-old Tijuana native was hitting .281/.418/.359 with one home run in 17 games with El Paso.

Ornelas will join a Padres team that has lost three opening-day outfielders to the injured list. Center fielders Jackson Merrill and Brandon Lockridge are not on the road with the club as they continue to recover from hamstring strains. Before Saturday’s move to the IL, Heyward was out of the starting lineup for a second consecutive game; the veteran had been scratched from the lineup Friday because of left knee inflammation.
“It didn’t improve as well as he would’ve liked,” Padres manager Mike Shildt told reporters in Houston on Saturday.
Ornelas is expected to focus on left field in the majors, but he could also see time in center field for a team lacking healthy depth at the latter position. Saturday’s lineup had corner outfielder-first baseman Connor Joe in center field for the first time in his big-league career.
Once considered among the Padres’ top young talents, Ornelas signed with the organization in 2017 for $1.5 million. He has settled in as a solid prospect with above-average raw power and modest ability as a defender and base runner. Ornelas, who was added to the 40-man roster in July, was one of the Padres’ final cuts in spring training after hitting .294/.368/.451 in 23 Cactus League games.
