Ben Affleck opens up about what it was like to play Batman: “I was too scared”

Ben Affleck, who played the Dark Knight in several DC Universe films, recently revealed his dislike for the iconic Batman costume. In an interview with GQ, the actor described the Batsuit as “horrendous to wear“, noting that it was extremely hot, lacked ventilation and showed little regard for the actor’s comfort. Affleck explained that the heat and sweating made filming particularly difficult and physically exhausting, even for professionals experienced in action scenes. “For starters, they’re hot. They don’t breathe. They’re made so that they look like they want them to look,” he said.

The actor detailed that the suit was not designed with the human being in mind, which resulted in an extenuating experience during filming. Despite enjoying the creative process of the films, Affleck acknowledged that wearing the suit made it difficult to feel heroic due to constant fatigue and sweat. He compared his experience to that of other actors who have played Batman, such as Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson, suggesting that they might have coped better with the discomforts of the suit. “It just made it hard to make the movie because it was so hot and also, it doesn’t really make you feel very heroic,” he continued, “because you’re instantly exhausted and sweating profusely, and trying to hide the sweat running down your face like saying, ‘No, we can go back, I’m fine, I’m fine,’ and the black eye is like running,” he explained. “Maybe Christian Bale or Rob Pattinson, guys like that, were just better at dealing with that,” Ben said.

Affleck also mentioned that, although he was initially attracted to the role to impress his son, he realized that his portrayal of a darker and more damaged Batman was too intense for some audiences, including his own son, who was frightened when he saw the film. This revelation has sparked conversations about the direction future portrayals of the superhero in film should take. “Even my own son at the time was too scared to see the movie. So when I saw it, I thought, ‘Shit! We have a problem,'” he said.
