Prince Andrew’s return to public royal duties on Easter Sunday has sparked significant attention, especially with his unexpected appearance at the annual service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
The Duke of York, accompanied by his ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York, attended alongside other members of the royal family, including Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.
Andrew has not been seen at a formal royal event since last Easter, so his appearance today was a notable one. Upon arriving at the chapel, he quickly entered the building before rejoining the rest of the family for the arrival of King Charles and Queen Camilla.
While waiting for the royal couple, Andrew was observed chatting with his brother-in-law, Sir Tim Laurence.
A lip reader, Jeremy Freeman, noted that although the exact conversation was unclear, Andrew mentioned Prince William and Kate, who were absent from the service to spend time with their children. It appears that the discussion revolved around a seating arrangement for the event.
Prince Andrew roundly criticized for his behavior
Body language expert Judi James analyzed Andrew’s behavior, describing it as displaying “cocky arrogance.”
She remarked that his body language seemed somewhat out of place, likening it to a debutante’s introduction. James noted that while Sarah Ferguson showed confidence, engaging with the crowd and clergy with her signature animated manner, Andrew appeared to wait until the rest of the family was in place before making his entrance.
He was then seen standing confidently with his legs splayed, one arm crossed over his belly and his free hand making sharp pointing gestures as he conversed with Sir Tim.
After King Charles’ arrival, Andrew retreated back into the shadows, reappearing to walk into the chapel alongside the King and Queen, possibly with Ferguson.
As he left St George’s Chapel following the service, a member of the crowd shouted “Happy Easter, sir,” to which Andrew briefly glanced before walking off with Fergie, who waved and smiled at well-wishers.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were notably absent, as they spent the weekend with their children at their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall. This was the second consecutive year that William and Kate missed the Easter service, following Kate’s battle with cancer, from which she is now in remission.
Andrew’s appearance at the service comes after a period of absence from public royal events. He had previously missed the royal Christmas gathering at Sandringham last year amid the ongoing controversy over his association with alleged Chinese spy links.
