The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, helps low-income individuals and families buy healthy food. In Texas, this support is handled by the Health and Human Services Commission.
Each month, beneficiaries receive the money on a card called the Lone Star Card, which works like a debit card. It can be used to buy basic foods such as fruits, vegetables, proteins, fats and carbohydrates. However, it cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco, hot food or to pay bills.
New SNAP Benefits eligibility criteria: Changes and updates
Unemployed people, low-income households and certain groups with special needs may qualify. For example, a single person can receive assistance if they earn less than $2,005 per month. A family of five can have an income of up to $4,832, and $707 is allowed for each additional person.
Low-income households may be eligible to enter the plan, as well as unemployed people. There are some rules for adults between 18 and 52 years old without children, such as having to look for work or train. But these rules do not apply to pregnant women or people with disabilities.
SNAP is an important way to ensure that more families can put food on their tables each day.
