Quinn Ewers once looked like a sure-fire NFL first-rounder. Now, he might not even crack the top 60.
After a strong but inconsistent final season at Texas, Ewers heads into the 2025 NFL Draft with more questions than answers.

Despite throwing for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns last year, his 12 interceptions and recent injuries-combined with a shaky Pro Day-have cooled his stock. And former Texas Longhorns standout Rod Babers believes that Ewers could be heading for an early third-round pick at best.
“I feel like he’s gonna go into the third round,” Babers said on the On Texas Football podcast. “He could sneak into the second, but go look at the history the last 10 years-you haven’t had a lot of quarterbacks drafted in the second round.” That’s a brutal drop for a quarterback who once drew top-10 projections out of high school and was hailed as the next face of the NFL.
Pro Day problems and scheme fit could define his future
The biggest blow to Ewers‘ momentum came during his Pro Day. While short-range throws looked clean, the longer passes raised red flags. A handful of wobbly throws stirred up concern among scouts, and Babers didn’t shy away from calling it out: “I think the Pro Day hurt him a little bit.”
Analyst Cody Carpentier delivered another cold take, comparing Ewers not to a franchise quarterback, but to journeyman-turned-coach Jordan Palmer. “I don’t think he’s going to be Tom Brady,” Carpentier said. “But you might get a decade out of him.” Not exactly the franchise centerpiece fans had hoped for.
Still, Babers sees a possible landing spot that could unlock Ewers’ upside. “If he ends up in a Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan offense… that’d be ideal.” Those systems, similar to Steve Sarkisian‘s high play-action and RPO-heavy schemes at Texas, could mask some of Ewers’ dropback deficiencies and help him thrive.
Shedeur Sanders’ draft position could make or break Ewers’ night
Here’s where things get even more complicated: Ewers‘ fate may be directly tied to where Shedeur Sanders lands.
Analysts like Jack Howe say teams like the Saints could trade up to grab Sanders, especially if they’re uncertain about Derek Carr‘s long-term status. If Sanders goes early-say, to the Jets via trade-it could trigger a quarterback run and boost Ewers‘ stock.
But if Sanders slides to pick 21, where the Steelers could pounce, Ewers may face a long wait. “If Shedeur slides,” Howe noted, “Quinn could be left hanging until deep into Day 2.”
So now, Ewers finds himself walking a tightrope. A few lucky breaks could vault him into the second round.
But a slow QB market and lingering doubts might relegate him to a backup role before he even gets started. Either way, his NFL future is far from certain.
