Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes are getting ready for the start of their 2025 season on August 29th at Folsom Field in Boulder, where they will go against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
They had a 7-on-7 session last Saturday after the retirement of superstar quarterback Shedeur Sanders No. 2 jersey, and also the No. 12 jersey worn by Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.

Sophomore wide receiver Joseph Williams caught two touchdown passes, one from freshman sensation Julian Lewis – who’s considered one of the gems of college football – and another from sophomore QB Ryan Staub. The offense was able to register another 14 points, something they are going to need when the season starts if they aspire to make it to the Big 12 Championship game.
Deion Sanders calls out his Colorado players
Before the game on Saturday, “Coach Prime” had some words for his players as he reminded them that, even though the program lost its two biggest stars, they will need to step up and shine at the highest level if they also want to become great and make it to the NFL.
“I am so darn proud of you. We are hard on you, but we wouldn’t be hard on you if we didn’t see something in you. Now we have a task to do, we have a job to do. We plan on winning. I know we about to acknowledge two wonderful athletes that are one of a kind, that we may never see again. But yet still, y’all have the propensity to make sure we see it again,” Sanders said.
One of the best NFL players ever added that he loved honoring Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, but he also needed to know who’s next. “You seen what they did, you seen how they work, you seen how they compete, you seen how they approach the game, who’s next? I’m sitting right here, I’m looking at a dawg right here in Cam. He may not have his jersey up there retired, but y’all understand his name, do we not? Dawg, every day that ends with a ‘y’, who’s next?
A great challenge ahead for Sanders and the Buffs
Deion Sanders was talking about Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig, a senior safety who was given the “L” on his jersey to signify him as a leader on the team. The Birmingham, Alabama native led the team with 93 total tackles and 65 unassisted tackles to go along with 10 tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, three pass breakups, two fumble recovieres, two sacks, one forced fumble, and oe interception during the 2024 season.
There’s no doubt that the Buffs have a great leader on Silmon-Craig. However, the biggest question going into the season is the quarterback battle between senior transfer Kaidon Salter,Lewis and Staub. The freshman completed 10-of-18 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown while Salter was 11-of-19 for 79 yards and an interception.
Staub completed both of his passes for 28 yards and a touchdown, both in the 7-on-7 session. “They got a ways to go, they got to improve, they got to do some things,” Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders said after the game. “We have to understand that these guys are different, they have different strengths and qualities about themselves, we have to make sure we maximize their potential.”
