Travis Hunter Sr. granted rare Draft Day visit
That emotional night will now find a full-circle moment at the NFL Draft, as a court has granted permission for Travis Hunter Sr. to attend the event in Green Bay.
Hunter Sr., 39, has been serving the first year of a three-year probation under home confinement, following a 2023 arrest on drug and firearm charges.
Though he was released shortly before the Heisman ceremony, he was unable to travel to New York at the time.
Now, under strict court-supervised conditions, he’ll be allowed to travel to Wisconsin and stand beside his son during one of the biggest moments of the young athlete’s life.
Hunter Jr., who is widely projected as a top-five pick in this year’s NFL Draft, has long credited his father for being a motivating force throughout his journey.
During his Heisman speech, he addressed his dad directly: “I want to say something to my father. He’s not here and wasn’t able to make it but I know you’re watching on TV. Dad, I love you… I did it for you, man.”
Reflecting on their relationship, Hunter added, “From not seeing probably two games in high school to seeing me on TV every weekend and coming to see me. That means so much to me… I got you. I’m bringing the trophy home.”
According to reports, Hunter Sr. will fly to Green Bay on Wednesday and return to Florida on Friday.
He’s required to stick to a limited itinerary and remain on hotel grounds except while attending the draft itself at Lambeau Field.
The draft presence is a major milestone not only for Hunter Jr., a generational two-way player, but also for his family.
Shirley Hunter, Travis Sr.’s mother, who attended the Heisman ceremony in New York, says she’s proud her son now has the chance to support his own child in person.
“I’d rather him be up there to be with his son than me,” she said.
“That’s his first son.”
As Hunter Jr. prepares to transition from college football to the NFL, he’s not just carrying the expectations of scouts and analysts, he’s carrying the hopes of a family that has traveled a long and emotional road to get here.
