Eine Ära geht zu Ende!
Nach 26 Jahren wird Fußball-Legende Gary Lineker (63) bei „Match of the Day“ der BBC aufhören. Seinen Abschied verkündete er bereits im November letzten Jahres, allerdings klang das damals noch ganz anders! In einem Interview mit dem Sender sprach er jetzt offen über die Details.

Ein Trost für seine Fans: Ganz verabschiedet er sich nicht von dem englischen Sender. Für die WM 2026 (USA, Mexiko, Kanada) und den FA Cup wird er weiterhin bei der BBC arbeiten. Außerdem setzt er die Arbeit an den beiden Podcasts „The Rest is Football“ und „MOTD Top Ten“ werden bei BBC-Sounds fortgesetzt.
Als er seinen Rücktritt bekannt gab, sagte Lineker noch, dass es der richtige Zeitpunkt ist, aufzuhören. Der Grund: Er wollte der nächsten Generation Platz machen. Davon, dass der Sender ihn nicht mehr will, war vergangenes Jahr noch nicht die Rede.
Auch die BBC gab damals eine Stellungnahme ab. Voller Lob für Lineker, den sie als „Weltklasse-Moderator“ bezeichneten. Von 2017 bis 2024 machten sie ihn zu ihrem bestbezahlten Moderator. Aber: 2023 war Lineker suspendiert worden.
Hintergrund: politische Äußerungen des Moderators – Lineker hatte die umstrittene Asylpolitik der englischen Regierung mit den Nazis verglichen. Ein Skandal auf der Insel! Konservative Politiker forderten schon damals den Rauswurf der Legende.
Weder die BBC noch Lineker äußern sich dazu, ob es einen Zusammenhang gibt. Abwegig scheint es jedoch nicht.

Ab der Saison 2025/26 müssen sich die englischen Fans an neue Gesichter gewöhnen: Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman und Gabby Logan übernehmen die beliebte Sendung. Das hatte die BBC schon im Januar bekannt gegeben. Alle drei arbeiten schon länger für den Sender, moderierten bislang andere Sendungen.
Mit den drei Moderatoren beginnt somit ein neues Zeitalter.
