Verstappen vyhrál čtyři po sobě jdoucí mistrovské tituly mezi lety 2021 a 2024. Toho posledního dosáhl i přes značný pokles výkonnosti vozu rakouské stáje ve druhé polovině loňské sezony.
Vstup do letošního roku neměl Red Bull zrovna oslnivý. Za největším konkurentem, stájí McLaren, zaostává a nemít v kokpitu Verstappena, na triumf by už mohl zapomenout. Vždyť už po dvou Velkých cenách měnila stáj druhého pilota. Místo Liama Lawsona zaujal Júki Cunoda, ale ani tento impulz zásadní změnu v bodovém přírůstku od Verstappenova kolegy nepřinesl.
Kvůli nedostatečně silné pozici v boji o pátý titul v řadě sílí spekulace o Nizozemcovu konci ve stáji. Smlouvu má až do konce roku 2028, ale její součástí je výstupní klauzule, která uvádí, že při nedostatečné výkonnosti vozu může Verstappen odejít ke konkurenci.
Přes tyto nelichotivé vyhlídky si Vettel, sám čtyřnásobný mistr světa ve voze Red Bull, myslí, že vztah Verstappena s rakouským týmem může díky této etapě sílit.
„Myslím si, že teď nastala situace, kdy se opravdu stmeluje tým. Po všech společných letech jsou si blízko a takové zkušenosti mohou ten vztah ještě posílit. Někteří lidé z týmu sice odešli a přišli jiní, ale pořád mají všichni společný cíl – mistrovský titul. Proto musí všichni tvrdě makat a vrátit se na vrchol,“ míní Vettel.
Podle něj Nizozemec za posledních pár let jezdecky vyspěl. Dokonce ho nazval nejkomplexnějším pilotem na startovním roštu. Podle Němce teď před 27letým lídrem Red Bullu stojí zásadní rozhodnutí.
„Max má nezpochybnitelný talent a během posledních let vyspěl. Přijde mi, že nad závoděním přemýšlí jinak než v minulosti. Je chytřejší. Když mluvím o pokroku, nemyslím jen v rychlosti nebo celkovém výkonu, spíš jde o konzistenci a spolehlivost. Vidím na něm, že přemýšlí, než udělá manévr. Čeká na ideální příležitost a pak ji využije.“
„Vidí, jak se závod vyvíjí, jaké možnosti má, a když příležitost nepřijde sama, vrátí se zpátky k agresivnějšímu stylu jízdy. Dokáže se ale perfektně kontrolovat a to z něj dělá nejlepšího pilota na současném gridu formule 1,“ chválil aktuálně třetího pilota v žebříčku Vettel.
„Když spojíte tyto dva aspekty, agresivitu a zkušenosti, s přirozenou rychlostí, je radost to sledovat.“

Letošní sezona seriálu formule 1 začala 16. března Velkou cenou Austrálie a končí 7. prosince v Abú Zabí. Titul mezi jezdci obhajuje Nizozemec Max Verstappen z Red Bullu a mezi stájemi britský McLaren.
