Shannon Sharpe is willing to do anything to keep his private life from becoming public knowledge. After it was revealed that the former Denver Broncos star offered $10 million to settle the sexual abuse lawsuit against him out of court, his legal team was quick to explain the former player’s reasons for seeking the settlement.
Sharpe’s legal saga began in late 2024 but became complicated a few weeks ago when an unidentified woman sued him in a Nevada court for alleged rape, battery, emotional distress, and unauthorized filming.
Although Sharpe denied the allegations, it emerged a few days ago that he had offered the plaintiff $10 million to avoid the lawsuit. The woman rejected the offer, but Sharpe’s legal team was forced to clarify that the settlement was not due to the former player’s guilt.
Sharpe wanted to avoid scandal
In a lengthy statement, Mitchell Schuster, the player-turned-analyst’s legal counsel, stated that his client offered the sum “to avoid the intimate details of his personal life from being exposed, as many high-profile individuals often do when they are being threatened.”
Schuster also addressed the other accusations against his client. “This is exactly what is happening to Shannon Sharpe, as the resurrection of the case involving Michele Evans is a perfect example. Sadly, Ms. Evans became obsessed with Shannon and decided to manufacture a claim against him.”
He recalled that Evans, Sharpe’s ex-girlfriend who accused him of sexual assault a couple of years ago and later sued him for defamation, was unable to find a lawyer “to pursue her outrageous story,” so she decided to file “a civil complaint on her own that is completely devoid of merit.”
Sharpe is innocent
Finally, Schuster asserted, “Shannon has done nothing wrong and intends to fight back against these malicious lies not with manufactured defenses or imaginary stories but with documentary proof and real evidence.”
For now, “Uncle” Sharpe, as his followers call him, has temporarily stepped down from his job at ESPN while awaiting a resolution to his legal situation. His next step, his lawyers explain, will be to file a countersuit for defamation.
