The San Francisco 49ers and their standout tight end, George Kittle, are reportedly making significant progress toward a contract extension. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Kittle arrived at the team’s voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) amid positive momentum in negotiations. While trade inquiries have been made by other teams, reports suggest the 49ers have no intention of moving their star player.
Kittle, 31, last inked a deal with the 49ers in 2020, a five-year, $75 million contract. With the final year of that agreement approaching in 2025, Kittle is set to earn a $14.4 million salary and carry a salary cap hit of just over $22 million, according to Spotrac. Despite his age, Kittle continues to be one of the league’s elite tight ends, known for his versatility, leadership, and on-field production.

A key figure in San Francisco’s offense, Kittle has consistently demonstrated his value, earning multiple All-Pro honors and Pro Bowl selections. After a few seasons without hitting the 1,000-yard mark, Kittle returned to form in 2023 with 65 receptions, 1,020 yards, and six touchdowns. Even during the 49ers’ challenging 6-11 campaign last season, Kittle was a bright spot, recording 78 catches for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns. His efforts earned him a fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nod and his sixth overall, along with a Second Team All-Pro selection.

Kittle’s importance to the 49ers extends beyond statistics. In franchise history, he ranks third in both receptions (538) and receiving yards (7,380), behind only Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens. He is also eighth in touchdown receptions with 45 and could climb into the top five with just four more scores in 2025. These milestones underscore his legacy and importance to the team’s storied history.
Heading into the 2025 season, Kittle is expected to play an even greater role in the offense, especially after the team traded wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders and with Brandon Aiyuk recovering from a torn ACL. As quarterback Brock Purdy returns under center, Kittle is poised to be his primary target, elevating the urgency to finalize an extension.
With the 49ers eager to reclaim their status as Super Bowl contenders, retaining Kittle is a top priority for the franchise. Fans and analysts alike are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the ongoing negotiations, as securing Kittle would reaffirm the team’s commitment to both its present and future success.
