While Shedeur Sanders grabbed much of the attention for his unexpected fall during the 2025 NFL Draft, Texas star Quinn Ewers found himself sliding much further than expected, before the Miami Dolphins finally called his name in the seventh round with the 231st pick.
Ewers, who helped guide Texas to consecutive College Football Playoff appearances, had been projected by some to go as early as Day 2. Instead, he endured a nerve-wracking wait before hearing from Miami.

The emotional moment was captured in a video shared by the University of Texas, showing Ewers visibly tearful as he took the call and embraced his family.
Ewers motivated to silence critics after draft day tumble
No one was more fired up than Ewers‘ longtime girlfriend, Madelyn Barnes. The Oklahoma marketing student, who has been dating Ewers for more than two years, made her feelings clear on Instagram.
“Miami baby!! Time to prove ’em all wrong,” Barnes wrote in an Instagram Story shortly after the pick was announced.
Barnes also posted a heartfelt message celebrating Ewers‘ resilience and work ethic.
“So incredibly proud and overjoyed!! Quinn, you are so deserving of this and a whole lot more! You’re the most driven, dedicated, and genuine man both on and off the field. I’m so excited for this journey and to watch you live out your dreams. GO DOLPHINS!!” she added.
Despite his slide, Ewers still brings plenty of credentials to the NFL. Across three seasons as the Longhorns‘ starter, after transferring from Ohio State, he threw for 9,128 yards, 68 touchdowns, and just 24 interceptions.
During his final two years in Austin, he held off highly touted recruit Arch Manning for the starting job, showcasing his poise under pressure.
Ewers also made headlines during the draft for another reason – eagle-eyed viewers spotted an impressive array of animal heads mounted on the walls behind him during the NFL’s live coverage of his draft wait. The unique background quickly went viral on social media.
Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier explained why they pounced when Ewers was still available in the seventh round.
“Sark [Texas coach Steve Sarkisian] really likes him and was high on him, talking about him playing through the injuries this year – which affected his play a little bit,” Grier said, according to ESPN. “But [Sarkisian] talked about his toughness, his mental toughness pushing through with the injury, the expectations, all the pressure with [Arch] Manning there coming in. He loved his competitiveness and how he plays, and how his teammates respond to him. So, he was someone that we always had an eye on and the opportunity at that point in the draft just made sense for us.”
