Aaron Rodgers seemingly down to only one option following Vikings QB JJ McCarthy’s confident comments

It’s tough to gauge how impactful the results of the 2025 NFL Draft will be on Aaron Rodgers‘ NFL future. Over the past couple of months, since he was released from the New York Jets, three teams emerged as heavy contenders to be Rodgers’ next destination: New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings.

We can say for sure the Giants are no longer an option, given they signed two veterans and drafted another quarterback. The Steelers made no moves at the position during the draft, paving the way for them to be the betting favorite. Then there’s the Vikings, who pulled off a trade for backup Sam Howell but still have a question mark at starter with 22-year-old JJ McCarthy coming off of a major injury. Minnesota theoretically closed the door on Rodgers, but it may still be open.

NFL Draft best moment when Eagles front office let escape Justin Jefferson for a waiver pick

JJ McCarthy says he feels 110% and ready to start a football game

That door is closing very quickly, though, especially after McCarthy appeared on the Vikings’ practice field and talked to media members on Tuesday. McCarthy gave an update on his injury recovery status, while also brimming with confidence about his 2025 season outlook.

Overall, I feel 110 percent because I feel better than when I got hurt eight months ago… I know I’m ready to start. Because all the work that I put in and just the confidence in my skills and abilities. And just being able to do my job and simplify things to the best of my ability every single day.

McCarthy looked sharp in practice, too, linking up with Jordan Addison and other pass-catchers.

The 22-year-old has some relatively big shoes to fill, as Sam Darnold had a Pro Bowl season in 2024. But Darnold crumbled in some big moments, which led to Minnesota moving on from him. Given how quarterback-friendly Kevin O’Connell‘s system is, McCarthy is set up for success. It doesn’t hurt that he’s so confident he will succeed.

Meanwhile, Rodgers is practically down to just the Steelers as a realistic option for 2025. Their current starting quarterback is Mason Rudolph. Every other team seems to have a plan in place at signal-caller.

Overreactions from Giants win over Eagles: Blame Howie Roseman for disaster? Jaxson Dart saved Brian Daboll?

The NFL is a funny league, especially when the unpredictable happens. There's a reason why we all tune in every single week, not knowing what's going to happen despite the oddsmakers telling you what to expect. The New York Giants had no chance to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, right? Not only did New York beat Philadelphia, the Giants stomped the Eagles. The Giants were the more physical team for all four quarters in a 34-17 victory, destroying the defending Super Bowl champions. The Eagles are far from that right now, as they have lost two games in five days after a 4-0 start. The Giants just lost to the New Orleans Saints five days ago, sandwiched in between knocking off the Los Angeles Chargers and Eagles at home over this 11-day stretch. NFL Week 6 schedule rankings: Top 5 Sunday games most likely to come down to the final drive

The NFL has gone 5-for-5 on its Sundays so far. How you feel about the opening weeks will be colored by your allegiances, but if we all zoom out, we’re looking at a suspenseful and entertaining season. Last Sunday was a bit tapered compared to Week 3’s high-water mark — the blocked kick revolution — but it still brought the loopiness. There were six one-score finishes, headlined by the Denver Broncos’ “wait … what?” comeback and the Arizona Cardinals’ “no … nooooooo!” collapse.AdvertisementTo suit the tension and manifest more must-see TV, we’re ranking this Sunday’s games by their potential for walk-off heroics. Cowboys’ under-the-radar weapon: OC Klayton Adams and his improved run game

Whether it’s on the field or off of it, almost nothing connected to the Dallas Cowboys flies under the radar. But there is a candidate this season in the coaching offices.Coming off another strong offensive performance, it’s fair to say the Cowboys have gone from having one of the NFL’s worst rushing offenses last season to one of the best this year. And much of that credit should go to offensive coordinator Klayton Adams.AdvertisementThe first-year OC doesn’t call the plays. That’s up to head coach Brian Schottenheimer. But Adams handles a significant part of the run game. Through five games, that group is averaging 34 more rushing yards per game. The Cowboys have already scored seven rushing touchdowns, which is one more than they had in 17 games last season. And they have had runs of 66, 49 and 30 […]

Are the Mets too data-driven? Who will play in winter leagues?: Mailbag part 2

Every time we open the floor to reader questions, we hem and haw about whether it should become a one-part or two-part mailbag. Along the road to Iowa vs. Wisconsin, beer and a storied college football rivalry flow together

IOWA-WISCONSIN BORDER — Long before Highway 151 doubled in size and became a four-lane connector, buses carried the Wisconsin and Iowa football teams over a winding, two-lane paved road that led them through small towns on both sides of the Mississippi River.Every other year, the Hawkeyes would travel 90 miles north from Iowa City to Dubuque for dinner, then cross the border to drive the remaining 90 miles to Madison. Fifteen minutes past Dubuque in Dickeyville, Wis., at a bar called the Squirrel’s Nest, patrons collected some liquid courage. They waited for the Iowa buses at a stoplight where Highways 151 and 61 meet.AdvertisementAs the buses approached the stoplight, cars and trucks slowly paraded through the intersection and honked at every vehicle with an Iowa license plate.
