Canelo Alvarez and Tiger Woods are both legends in their respective arenas – one a four-division world champion in boxing, the other a fifteen-time Major winner in golf. But when these two sports icons cross paths, the result isn’t the dazzling collaboration fans might expect.
Instead, Canelo‘s latest comments have unintentionally added another layer to the challenges currently facing the golf titan.

Woods, once the dominant force at the summit of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) for an unprecedented stretch, has now hit the lowest point of his career. The 49-year-old icon has fallen to 1341st in the world rankings, a dramatic slide largely due to an extended absence from the PGA Tour.
Earlier this year, Woods suffered an Achilles injury during training, forcing him to withdraw from the 2025 Masters at Augusta National. He has not competed on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at The Open Championship in July 2024. Given the severity of his injury and the continued uncertainty surrounding his recovery, Woods is expected to miss the remainder of the 2025 season.
Canelo’s confidence in golf highlights Tiger’s ongoing woes
Adding to Woods‘ tough year, Canelo Alvarez has made headlines with a bold statement when asked whether he could beat Tiger Woods at golf or if Woods could best him in the boxing ring.
“I think that question is out of the world,” Canelo Alvarez said. “Because I’m never going to beat him in golf and he’s never going to beat me in boxing.
“Let me tell you something. I can play golf, [but] he can’t play boxing. That’s the difference.”
Canelo‘s passion for golf has become more than just a hobby. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mexican champion took to the greens, and he now has plans to pursue a professional golf career after his boxing days are over.
