Although they didn’t need a full-on rebuild, the Kansas City Chiefs came into this offseason with a bit more questions than usual. A stunning blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX exposed weaknesses that many fans didn’t know the team had, forcing the front office to make tough decisions once free agency rolled around.
Then came the 2025 NFL Draft last week, where GM Brett Veach picked up great values at key positions. The front office has once again put the team in a good position for a run at the Super Bowl, but they’re not done yet. The Chiefs want to be as competitive as possible for as long as possible. Since they didn’t lose many veterans this offseason, they should be more than fine for 2025. But the front office has eyes on beyond, as they made a move to secure their future on Tuesday.

Chiefs exercise fifth-year option on Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis
The Chiefs picked up the fifth-year options for George Karlaftis and Trent McDuffie on Tuesday. The deadline to exercise the option or not was May 1, so they did it with time to spare.
McDuffie and Karlaftis were taken in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Chiefs had two first round picks in that draft due to the Tyreek Hill trade, and they hit two home runs with their selections. Given that the Chiefs’ defense was arguably the biggest reason the team made the Super Bowl last year, it was a no-brainer to pick up their options and secure their roster spots through the 2026 season.
The Chiefs are turning their eyes to the future now, especially with Travis Kelce possibly retiring after this upcoming season. Aside from Chris Jones and Drue Tranquill, the Chiefs are quite young on defense. Keeping Karlaftis and McDuffie there for as long as possible will help with continuity, and their growing leadership skills will help if Kelce jets off after 2025.

Kansas City also got younger on offense in the draft. Tackle Josh Simmons, wide receiver Jalen Royals and running back Brashard Smith will be under Kelce and Patrick Mahomes‘ wings as rookies. It’s a new era in Kansas City, but with familiar faces still there.
