Being part of the NFL is a dream come true, especially if on average, only about 1.6% of all NCAA football players make it to the big league.
Once they get to be part of a franchise, players could get big contracts, depending on the position they play, their agents, age, and how productive they can be on the field.
Serious money! New England Patriots coaches and players reveal what they did with their first check
For the 2025 season, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has the biggest contract on the league ($60 million), ranked by the average annual value of his contract, according to Over the Cap. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills quarterback and the most recent MVP of the league, is second, with $55 million.

NFL Draft 2025: Who drafted best in the AFC?
While the NFL is the most significant moneymaker, athletes in other sports have higher salaries, both average and absolute. The NBA, for example, has the best paid professional players, on average, with a salary of $9.7 million. The MLB comes second, with an average annual salary of $4.5 million. Next is the NHL, with $3.8 million. The football league comes at fourth, with an average salary of $2.8 million.
So what do players do with their first paycheck? The New England Patriots asked some of its members that question, and the answers are pretty interesting. Head coach Mike Vrabel – who played 14 seasons as a linebacker, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pats, and the Kansas City Chiefs – had a good story.
“I bough a car. Actually, I leased a car but I forgot you have to make payments on it, so thank God that I fixed that!! he said. Wide receiver DeMario Douglas, a second year player, also bought a vehicle with his first NFL check. Same goes for flashy wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. Safety Jaylinn Hawkins and linemean Wes Schweitzer, however, decided to save their first payday.
The hard reality about NFL careers
Even though some fans would love for their favorite players to be on the field for a long time, the reality is quite the opposite. According to statista.com, the average NFL career spans a mere 3.3 years, regardless of the player’s position. It’s a sobering reminder of the sacrifices athletes make for the sport they love.
Pro Football Reference unveils a striking truth- quarterbacks face one of the shortest average careers in the NFL, lasting roughly 30 games. The quarterback position demands exceptional skill, resilience and adaptability, as they carry the responsibility of leading their team on offense.
Coaches and front office personnel often have little patience for underperforming quarterbacks, leading to a “now or never” atmosphere. As the team’s focal point, a quarterback’s career can swiftly rise or crumble, making their journey through the NFL an intense, high-stakes affair.
