Ever since it was revealed that Meghan Markle sent a gift basket labeled with the title “HRH The Duchess of Sussex,” royal watchers have reignited a debate that’s lingered since 2020: Can the British monarchy actually take away the royal titles of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?
Their decision to step back from senior royal duties raised questions about what role, if any, they should still play in the institution they distanced themselves from. And now, years later, the issue of their titles still seems to divide not only the public, but also the royal family itself.

The limits of British rroyal power
Despite public commitments made to the late Queen Elizabeth to no longer use their “His/Her Royal Highness” styling, Meghan’s recent use of the title has stirred controversy.
While technically not used for commercial purposes, her reintroduction of HRH, even in a personal gesture, was seen by some insiders as a deliberate provocation.
It has also intensified claims that Prince William, who is said to harbor deep resentment over their actions, intends to strip them of their titles entirely once he becomes king.
Although the royal family operates with immense tradition and symbolism, the power to revoke peerages, such as “Duke and Duchess of Sussex”, doesn’t lie solely with the monarch.
These titles were granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018, and removing them would require an act of Parliament.
While there has been discussion in recent years about legislation that could allow either the monarch or a parliamentary body to revoke such honors, no such law currently exists.
In contrast, the HRH honorific is more flexible.
Legal experts suggest it falls within the personal gift of the reigning monarch and could be rescinded unilaterally.
Precedents do exist, Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson both lost the HRH styling following their divorces.
However, Meghan and Harry’s case is unique in that they voluntarily stepped down, rather than being divorced or ousted by scandal.
This makes the path forward less clear and potentially more controversial.
Still, insiders believe that William may not share King Charles’s reluctance to act.
While Charles is viewed as preferring to avoid public conflict with his son and daughter-in-law, William is reportedly far more firm in his stance.
Friends of the prince say he is outraged by what he sees as the couple’s continued exploitation of royal status, and will find a way to end it when he ascends the throne.In the end, while the monarch can remove the HRH style, and might one day be able to strip titles like “Duke of Sussex” with parliamentary backing, the question remains whether such a dramatic move is politically wise or emotionally worth it.
For now, the titles remain, but the controversy is far from over.
