Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter has offered a blunt assessment of the situation, claiming Sanders’ pre-draft behavior cost him between $30 and $50 million. Speaking on a recent podcast, Carter criticized several key decisions made by the former Colorado quarterback, including his choice to skip workouts at the NFL Combine and his reportedly underwhelming performance in interviews. “He threw away at least $30-$50 million,” Carter stated, emphasizing that Sanders’ actions may have left teams unconvinced of his franchise potential.

Reports have corroborated Carter’s claims, with ESPN’s Todd McShay revealing that Sanders’ interview with New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll fell short of expectations. According to McShay, Daboll called Sanders out for his lack of preparation, leading the Giants to pass on him not only with their No. 3 overall pick but throughout the draft entirely.

While his slide in the draft has been widely discussed, Sanders’ college performance at Colorado remains commendable. The 23-year-old quarterback threw for over 4,000 yards and 37 touchdowns during his final season, earning him accolades such as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. However, critics argue that his strong on-field performance was overshadowed by the perception of overconfidence and questionable pre-draft decisions.
Adding an intriguing wrinkle to the story, the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League recently placed Sanders on their negotiation list. While Sanders has not publicly expressed interest in the CFL, the move offers a potential backup plan should his NFL career falter.
For now, Sanders begins his professional journey with the Cleveland Browns, where he will face the challenge of proving his worth in a competitive quarterback room. Despite the setbacks, Sanders’ determination and talent could still pave the way for a successful career, if he can overcome the public and professional scrutiny surrounding his draft experience.
