The Athletics are calling up pitching prospect Gunnar Hoglund, a 2021 first-round pick and the key piece in the 2022 trade that sent Matt Chapman to the Blue Jays, a source confirmed to The Athletic on Thursday.
After six strong starts with Triple-A Las Vegas, Hoglund will join an A’s rotation featuring Luis Severino, JP Sears and Jeffrey Springs. With J.T. Ginn landing on the injured list with elbow inflammation on April 25, a rotation spot opened for Hoglund, who ranks as the Athletics’ No. 12 prospect, per Keith Law.

Hoglund’s promotion was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Hoglund’s ascension to the big leagues has been a slow climb since joining the A’s. The right-hander had Tommy John surgery during his junior season at Ole Miss in 2021 and he struggled in his return to the mound in 2022 and 2023. His fastball velocity ticked back to pre-injury form this year, sitting in the low 90s, and his Triple-A numbers reflected the jump. In six starts for Las Vegas, Hoglund posted a 2.43 ERA with 30 strikeouts to seven walks.
Hoglund came to the A’s as part of the spring 2022 teardown that saw the team trade Chapman, Matt Olson, Sean Manaea, and Chris Bassitt. The A’s haven’t hit on many prospects from that significant sell off, with catcher Shea Langeliers and Ginn representing the only players acquired in the four deals currently on the A’s roster, before Hoglund’s promotion.
At times, that 2022 teardown looked fruitless. But if Hoglund can carry his minor league success to MLB, the starter’s promotion would be a win for a franchise looking to inject more young talent at the MLB level.
