Einer, der Albas Aufschwung am eigenen Leib erfahren durfte, ist Akeem Vargas. Der Ex-Alba-Profi (2013 – 2018), der seit letztem Sommer beim MBC unter Vertrag steht, verlor am Mittwoch hoch beim Vizemeister – nachdem er drei Tage zuvor hauchdünn gegen Meister Bayern den Kürzeren gezogen hatte.
„Meiner Meinung haben wir gegen Bayern nicht verloren“, betont Vargas, bevor er die beiden Teams vergleicht. Bayern hatte durch einen umstrittenen Dreier in der Schluss-Sekunde gewonnen, der MBC aber dagegen Protest eingelegt.
Akeem Vargas: „Albas ist eine sehr gut geölte Maschine“
„Gegen Berlin musst du von der ersten Sekunde hellwach sein. Das waren wir eben nicht. Wir haben uns am Anfang den Schneid abkaufen lassen. Und dann ist Alba eine sehr gut geölte Maschine, die ins Laufen kam. Da hat es bei uns überall eingeschlagen.“
[–>„Ich hoffe auf das Match-up Alba gegen Bayern, irgendwann in der Postseason“, sagt Vargas, dessen Herz immer noch für Alba schlägt, obwohl er die Berliner vor sieben Jahren Richtung Frankfurt verließ.

Trotzdem sieht er die Bayern vorn: „München schätze ich trotzdem noch ein wenig gefährlicher ein als Alba. Bayern hat für mich den tieferen Kader, enorm viel Qualität vor allem unter dem Korb.“ Dass sein MBC gegen die Bayern deutlich besser aussah als gegen Alba will er nicht überbewerten. „Die Ergebnisse im direkten Duell werte ich weniger hoch als den Tabellenplatz über die ganze Saison“, erklärt der Routinier.
Dennoch traut er Alba sehr erfolgreiche Playoffs zu. „Ja, bei Alba waren die Leistungen sehr schwankend, im Vergleich zu dem, was man sonst gewohnt ist. Aber sie haben noch die Möglichkeit, in die Playoffs zu kommen und durchzumarschieren.“

Ein Grund dafür ist für Vargas auch der neue Alba-Trainer Pedro Calles: „Mit ihm haben sie etwas mehr Defense, was besser zu dem Kader passt. Von außen sieht es so aus, als würde es den Spielern guttun und besser passen. Wenn sie das machen, sind sie sehr, sehr gefährlich.“
