A recent tier list ranking NFL fanbases from best to worst has ignited passionate debates among fans.
Shared by the @JPAFootball account on X (formerly Twitter), the list was originally compiled by fan page @Diazenlanfl. While teams like Detroit, Minnesota, Buffalo, Green Bay, and Seattle were lauded as having “The Best Fans,” the real uproar began with the bottom tier labeled “Non-Existent.”
Five teams-Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders, and Carolina Panthers-were placed here, sparking immediate backlash from their respective fanbases.
The backlash from the bottom tier
Fans of these teams were quick to defend their loyalty and presence. A Washington Commanders supporter retorted, “If you think Washington has no fanbase, you don’t watch football…”
Similarly, a Carolina Panthers fan pointed out that the list ignored the passionate support from their fanbase. In Los Angeles, Rams fans took the opportunity to criticize the Chargers for their perceived lack of presence at SoFi Stadium, highlighting the strong home support Rams games receive compared to their stadium-sharing rivals.
The tier list’s methodology has been questioned, with many arguing that it oversimplifies the complexities of fan loyalty. Factors such as team success, ownership stability, and regional support play significant roles in shaping a fanbase.
For instance, the Arizona Cardinals, despite their historical challenges, have a dedicated local following. Similarly, the Jacksonville Jaguars, though facing attendance issues, have a core group of passionate fans. The Washington Commanders, once a powerhouse in the NFL, are in the process of rebuilding their fanbase after years of turmoil under previous ownership.
There was also pushback from fans in the insufferable block – which includes teams like the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs. Some of those teams, like the Eagles and Chiefs, have been successful in recent years, which tends to put a bullseye on you.
The Patriots are coming off one of the most dominant stretches in NFL history, while the Cowboys and Giants have large followings in huge markets, with rival fans usually taking aim at them over constantly being in headlines.
The importance of fan identity
This controversy underscores the deep connection fans have with their teams. Being labeled as having a “non-existent” fanbase can feel like a personal affront to those who have supported their team through thick and thin. It’s essential to recognize that fan loyalty isn’t solely determined by attendance figures or recent team performance. Many fans continue to support their teams through challenging times, demonstrating resilience and dedication.
While tier lists can be fun and spark conversation, they often fail to capture the full picture of what it means to be a fan. The passionate responses from fans of the Cardinals, Jaguars, Chargers, Commanders, and Panthers highlight the importance of acknowledging the diverse and enduring support that exists across all NFL teams. Ultimately, fan loyalty is about more than rankings-it’s about unwavering support and a shared love for the game.
