Em novembro de 2024, ele sofreu um pequeno AVC e precisou se afastar das atividades dos Spurs. Desde 1988 em San Antonio, ele assumiu como técnico na temporada 1996/1997, comandando 2291 jogos no total. Foram 1422 vitórias (62,1% de aproveitamento), com cinco títulos (1998/99, 2002/03, 2004/05, 2006/07 e 2013/14) e três vezes eleito o Técnico do Ano da NBA (2002/03, 2011/12 e 2013/14). Ele é o recordista da premiação, empatado com Don Nelson e Pat Riley.
Nesta temporada, os Spurs terminaram na 13ª colocação na Conferência Oeste, sob o comando de Johnson, e não avançaram para os playoffs. Jovem promessa da NBA, o francês Wembanyama, de 2.24m de altura, escolheu a franquia de San Antonio para poder trabalhar com Popovich.
