Alexander Volkanovski is not just the reigning UFC featherweight champion. Nor is he simply a tireless warrior who has faced the best fighters in the world in the cage. Volkanovski, or simply ‘Volk’ to his followers and friends, has also been shown to have another secret weapon: his culinary side.
For just over a year now, the Australian fighter has surprised the sporting world with his most unexpected and approachable side: that of a cook. Under the name ‘Cooking with Volk’, Volkanovski has launched a series of videos on his YouTube channel, and more recently on TikTok, where he shares homemade recipes, culinary tips and his love of good food.
But this is not an empty marketing strategy or a passing fad. For Volkanovski, cooking is a genuine passion that he has had since his years as a rugby player.
From fighter to chef
The idea of creating culinary content came about in the middle of training camps, where Volkanovski and his team would spend weeks preparing for fights and taking care of their diet in detail. In practice, ‘Cooking with Volk’ mixes humour, simplicity and recipes that range from healthy food for athletes to more indulgent dishes with an Australian twist.
Since its first episode, the channel has gained a solid and growing fan base. With more than 600,000 subscribers on YouTube and millions of combined views, the format has proven to have a special appeal. Volkanovski prepares everything from homemade post-weigh-in burgers to healthy versions of Australian classics and recipes inspired by his travels around the world during his UFC commitments.
On TikTok, the reach has been even more explosive. There, where the format is shorter and more dynamic, Volkanovski adapts his recipes into one-minute clips full of rhythm, humor and flavor, even ASMR.
