Olympic superstar Simone Biles and her husband, Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens, graced the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs this Saturday, looking every bit the power couple in matching lavender outfits. While their stylish appearance deserved accolades, it was a comment Owens made during a pre-race interview with NBC that ignited a firestorm online.
Owens boldly claimed he had a flawless record of predicting the winners of the undercard races at Churchill Downs, going a perfect three-for-three. However, when pressed to reveal his pick for the main event, the Kentucky Derby itself, Owens coyly refused. “I can’t tell you yet,” he stated, adding, “I got to keep it to the family.”
This seemingly innocuous comment immediately raised red flags among eagle-eyed viewers, who took to social media to accuse Owens of outright fabrication. The sudden secrecy surrounding his Derby pick, after boasting about his flawless earlier predictions, struck many as disingenuous.
Fans call out Owens’s lie
“Jonathan Owens just claimed in the last 4 races he went 3/3 and picked the right winner in the 4th (didn’t bet it) ….BUT won’t share his pick for the derby….buddy don’t tell us you’re hot if you’re not going to share,” one skeptical fan vented on X.
The accusations didn’t stop there. “Why is Jonathan Owens just lying,” another user bluntly questioned. A third chimed in with, “Jonathan Owens just straight up lying dawg, he DID not pick 4 winners.”
The online backlash was swift and unforgiving, with many finding Owens’ sudden reluctance to share his Derby pick highly suspicious after his earlier pronouncements of success.
Fans have Owens under the microscope
While the motivation behind Owens’ alleged exaggeration remains unclear, this isn’t the first time the NFL player has faced scrutiny for his public statements.
Regardless of the truth, the incident has undoubtedly overshadowed the couple’s otherwise glamorous appearance at the prestigious horse racing event, leaving a cloud of online skepticism hanging over Owens’ claims.
