After nearly three decades at the helm, Gregg Popovich is stepping down as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Popovich, 76, will transition to the role of president of basketball operations, marking the end of an era for one of the most respected figures in NBA history.

James has long praised Popovich, previously calling him the “greatest coach of all time.” Their relationship dates back to 2004 when Popovich served as an assistant coach for Team USA. Over the years, they’ve competed against each other in some of the most memorable NBA Finals matchups.
In 2007, Popovich’s Spurs swept James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in his first Finals appearance. The two met again in 2013, when James led the Miami Heat to a thrilling seven-game victory over the Spurs. The following year, Popovich and the Spurs responded by defeating the Heat in five games, reclaiming their place atop the NBA.
