It’s been five years since Tom Brady walked away from the Patriots and into a new chapter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and somehow the tension around that breakup still lingers. The latest wrinkle? A leaked email from Bill Belichick-apparently shared by his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson-that’s adding fuel to the long-smoldering fire.
Belichick, now coaching at the University of North Carolina, has been making the rounds promoting his new book, The Art of Winning. But during a recent CBS Mornings interview, it wasn’t the football wisdom that grabbed headlines-it was Hudson, 24, interjecting awkwardly as Belichick was asked about their relationship. It was uncomfortable. It went viral. And soon after, an April 10 email from Belichick appeared on social media.

The message wasn’t meant for public eyes. In it, Belichick vented about media coverage of his book: “I don’t think this is fantastic, but it probably will hype the book, which is clearly the ongoing theme here.” He didn’t name names, but the tone-controlled, frustrated, slightly bitter-caught the attention of longtime Patriots fan and sports media figure Bill Simmons.

On a recent episode of The Ryen Russillo Podcast, Simmons didn’t hold back. “It was never just about football,” he said. “It was about who deserved the credit.”
That tension had been reported as far back as 2018, when ESPN’s Seth Wickersham revealed a growing divide between Brady and Belichick. The coach wanted to move forward with backup Jimmy Garoppolo, but Brady-worried about his job security-reportedly blocked it. Belichick eventually caved under pressure from team owner Robert Kraft and traded Garoppolo to San Francisco.
Behind the scenes, it got messy. Brady refused to mentor Garoppolo. Belichick resisted giving Brady a long-term extension. And according to Wickersham, things reached a boiling point in a private October meeting that ended with the trade.
Now, in hindsight, the leaked email sounds a lot like a man still stewing over how things ended.
And when Brady hoisted a Super Bowl trophy with the Buccaneers in 2021? That only made the silence louder.
Simmons believes the email says the quiet part out loud: “When Brady won that title without Belichick, it changed the narrative. And yeah, that stung.”
Garoppolo, meanwhile, never became the star Belichick hoped he would be. He led the 49ers to a Super Bowl but struggled to stay healthy, eventually landing in a backup role with the Rams.
Brady and Belichick have kept it cordial in public, but the leak gives fans a peek behind the curtain-one that confirms what many suspected all along: the break-up wasn’t just business. It was personal.
