The 2025 Met Gala turned into a runway-meets-locker room spectacle Monday night as some of the world’s top athletes traded cleats and medals for couture-and absolutely owned New York’s biggest fashion event of the year.
While the night’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” honored the elegance and influence of Black dandyism and marked the first Met Gala theme focused on menswear in more than 20 years, it was Olympic icon Simone Biles and NFL star husband Jonathan Owens who delivered one of the most unforgettable moments on the carpet.
Biles dazzled in a short blue dress with a dramatic train and towering heels, giving high fashion a playful twist. Owens matched her energy in an all-white suit accented with fur and accessorized with a cane-yes, a cane-bringing luxury swagger to new levels. The power couple wasn’t just posing-they were setting the tone.
Chi Barbie stood out among the WNBA beauties
Also turning heads was Angel Reese, the WNBA breakout star, who returned to the Met Gala red carpet in style as part of this year’s athlete-packed host committee, which also included Sha’Carri Richardson. LSU basketball phenom Flau’jae Johnson made her debut in a stunning black and white gown, following in her former teammate Reese’s footsteps.
Meanwhile, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, serving as one of the official co-chairs, didn’t disappoint in a custom ivory look by Wales Bonner, topped with a sharp Stephen Jones hat. Though honorary chair LeBron James was sidelined due to a knee injury, wife Savannah James repped the family in a sleek striped suit with a mermaid skirt.
A sporting constellation at the Met Gala
Other big-name athletes gracing the Met Gala carpet included:
Venus Williams, nodding to her tennis roots in a pleated emerald ensemble.
Serena Williams, stunning in an icy blue gown with a statement silver cover.
Dwyane Wade, bejeweled and bold alongside wife Gabrielle Union.
Joe Burrow, making his Met debut in a steely suit and signature ice-blue shades.
Saquon Barkley, showing off his Super Bowl-winning swagger in Thom Browne.
Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, repping WNBA glam in coordinated black and white looks.
From championship rings to red-carpet royalty, this year’s Met Gala proved that when it comes to fashion, these athletes don’t just play the game-they run it.
