On the jetty of the Gritti Palace in Venice, the fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger tried to step down into a water taxi. Hannah Hampton: How can a goalkeeper with almost no depth perception play at the top level?

Hannah Hampton was not supposed to make it as a professional athlete. The doctors told her it would not be possible. That professional sport was not meant for someone like her.In Hampton’s case, “someone like her” meant someone born with a condition called strabismus or eye misalignment, meaning one eye is turned in a direction that’s different from the other. By the age of three, Hampton had undergone three operations in an attempt to correct it. None of those proved wholly successful but as she grew up, it seemed she was largely unaffected by the condition. Football seemed to come easily to the young girl who was fast on her feet and naturally used both to control the ball and, by the age of 12, she was training as a goalkeeper in Stoke City’s centre of excellence.AdvertisementIt came as a […]

Club World Cup prize money: Where did the $1billion prize pot go?

President Donald Trump’s apparent reluctance to leave the stage during the trophy lift bemused plenty, not least the Chelsea players surrounding him. Yet, in many ways, Trump being front and centre offered a perfect human avatar for FIFA’s revamped Club World Cup: ostentatious, brash, money never too far from the conversation.AdvertisementThat money has flowed in torrents this summer, via an intriguing route.Like it or not, the end result is clear and headline-grabbing. Across 32 competing teams over the last month, FIFA have doled out a $1billion (£744m) prize pot. Sunday evening’s final between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain saw each side earn $30m just for getting there, before Chelsea’s 3-0 victory banked them a further $10m.There were reasons beyond football for both the team and the club’s owners — chairman Todd Boehly looked plenty happy alongside Trump after full time — […]

Cal Raleigh wins MLB Home Run Derby 2025: Live updates and reaction

Newly crowned Cal Raleigh joins the ESPN set still clearly a bit overwhelmed by the events of the night:"The whole night is amazing.
