In the chaotic days leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, quarterback Shedeur Sanders-son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders-was at the center of swirling speculation.
Projected by many as a potential first- or second-round pick, Sanders instead saw his name slide all the way to the fifth round before being scooped up by the Cleveland Browns with the 144th overall selection.

Amid the dramatic drop, reports emerged suggesting that Sanders may have sabotaged his own standing with at least one team: the New York Giants.
NFL insider Todd McShay, speaking for The Ringer, was among the first to claim that Sanders‘ predraft visit with the Giants didn’t go well.

According to McShay, the Colorado quarterback arrived for his meeting with head coach Brian Daboll allegedly unprepared and didn’t respond well to Daboll‘s criticism.
“Got called out on it” and “didn’t like that,” McShay explained, adding that Daboll “didn’t appreciate [Sanders] not liking it.”
Meeting lacked chemistry
That narrative painted a picture of tension between the young quarterback and a demanding coach-raising questions about Sanders‘ readiness for the NFL and how well he could handle high-pressure environments.
In a piece published Tuesday, New York Post reporter Paul Schwartz sought to cool the flames around the alleged friction. He claimed that any suggestion “Sanders was unprepared for an install test Daboll gave him and then balked at Daboll‘s criticism” is either “untrue or overhyped.”
According to Schwartz, the meeting may have simply lacked chemistry rather than being a full-blown disaster.
That interpretation aligns with a new report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who shared on Wednesday.
“While the Giants worked out Shedeur Sanders the week before the draft, Sanders sensed much earlier that New York probably wasn’t in the cards for him. Sanders openly acknowledged during the predraft process that he didn’t hit it off with Giants coaches,” Fowler said.
