Bei der Weltmeisterschaft 2026 der Männer in den USA, Kanada und Mexiko werden erstmals 48 Teams mitspielen. Nun ziehen auch die Frauen nach.

Revolution im Frauen-Fußball! Die Fifa hat bestätigt, dass bei der Frauen-WM 2031 erstmals 48 Teams statt 32 antreten werden. Die USA sind als Austragungsort im Gespräch, eine offizielle Entscheidung fällt 2026.

[–>Fifa-Präsident Gianni Infantino hatte bereits beim Uefa-Kongress in Belgrad Anfang April ein größeres Turnier in Aussicht gestellt. Dies hat der Fifa-Council jetzt offiziell beschlossen.

Infantino: „Es geht nicht nur darum, 16 weitere Mannschaften bei der Fifa Frauen-Weltmeisterschaft zu haben, sondern auch darum, die nächsten Schritte im Hinblick auf den Frauenfußball im Allgemeinen zu unternehmen. Wir möchten sicherstellen, dass mehr Fifa-Mitgliedsverbände von dem Turnier profitieren und ihre Frauen-Fußballstrukturen ganzheitlich weiterentwickeln können.“

Nun ist es also beschlossene Sache. Somit wird die WM 2031 in 12 Gruppen ausgetragen, statt 64 Spiele wird es dann 104 Partien geben. Zudem wird das Turnier eine Woche länger dauern.

Frauen-WM 2027 letztmals mit 32 Nationen

Erst zur Frauen-WM 2023 in Australien und Neuseeland wurde die Zahl der Teams bei der Endrunde von 24 auf 32 erhöht. Für die WM 2027 in Brasilien wird auf 32 Nationen aufgestockt. Vier Jahre später kommen also nochmal 16 Teams dazu.

Für die Frauen-WM 2031 hatte die Fifa erklärt, nur ein „gültiges Angebot“ erhalten zu haben. Die Bewerbung kommt aus den USA. Eine offizielle Entscheidung soll im Frühjahr 2026 gefällt werden.

JT Batson, CEO von U.S. Soccer: „Achtundvierzig Mannschaften sind etwas, für das wir uns leidenschaftlich eingesetzt haben. Wir glauben, dass dies für das Wachstum des Frauen-Fußballs unglaublich wichtig wäre.“

Und weiter: „Wir glauben also, dass dies zu unglaublichen Investitionen in den Frauen- und Mädchenfußball auf der ganzen Welt führen würde.“
