Neither King Charles nor Prince William: Buckingham Palace announces who it will send to the investiture of Pope Leo XIV

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles III will not attend the official installation of Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected leader of the Catholic Church.

Instead, His Majesty will be represented by his brother, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, at the papal inauguration scheduled for May 18 at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.

A kind act! King Charles breaks protocol with surprising gesture toward 98-year-old veteran

“The Duke of Edinburgh will represent His Majesty at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV,” a palace spokesperson said.

The decision follows a longstanding tradition within the British monarchy, where reigning sovereigns do not typically attend funerals or inaugurations of heads of state. These duties are often assigned to senior members of the Royal Family.

Pope Leo XIV faces a deeply divided U.S. Catholic Church

This protocol was observed previously when Prince William, now the Prince of Wales, attended the funeral of the previous pope on behalf of King Charles.

Similarly, when Pope John Paul II died in 2005, Charles-then Prince of Wales-represented Queen Elizabeth II. At the inauguration of Pope Benedict XVI, Prince Philip attended on behalf of the Queen, while the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were present at Pope Francis’ installation in 2013.

First American pontiff

The new pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, emerged from the conclave as the 267th successor of Saint Peter after two days of deliberations involving 133 cardinals. Born in Chicago and formerly known as Father Bob, the new pope is the first American to ever lead the Catholic Church.

After white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, the world watched as Pope Leo XIV made his first public appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Speaking to the crowd gathered below, he offered a simple yet powerful greeting: “Peace be with you.”

“Together, we must try to find out how to be a missionary church, a church that builds bridges, establishes dialogues. That’s always open to receive, on this piazza with open arms, to be able to receive everybody that needs our charity.

“I would particularly like to say hello to my compatriots from Peru. It was a great pleasure for me to work in Peru.

“Let us pray together for this new mission, for the whole church. And for peace throughout the world. And let’s ask for this special grace from Mary, our mother.”

Knicks had a chance to be on the right side of NBA history. Now they have questions

NEW YORK — Slice it however you want, but the Knicks needed Game 3 just as much as the Celtics.Just like no team has ever come back from being down 0-3 in a playoff series, no team in NBA history has ever blown a 3-0 series lead. New York, up 2-0 going into Saturday’s game, had the chance to be on the right side of history. It was the Knicks, not the Celtics, who had the opportunity to pull out receipts and stick it to everyone who said they’d have no chance against the defending NBA champions. That should be enough motivation to come out ready to roll.AdvertisementAnd Saturday could have been a day of celebration. It could have been a moment for a franchise, a team and a passionate fan base to take in just how far they’ve come. […]
