Vor dem Spiel in Southampton (0:0) sprach Pep Guardiola (53) ganz offen über Fehler und übt schonungslose Selbstkritik. Der Man-City Coach nimmt die Schuld für die durchwachsene Leistung seiner Mannschaft auf sich.
„Es ist auf jeden Fall die schwierigste Saison meiner Zeit als Trainer gewesen. Es hätte schlimmer kommen können, aber ich war nicht gut genug, einen Ausweg zu finden“, sagt er.

Bereits der vergangene Herbst war zum Vergessen. Eine mögliche Ursache: die Verletzung von Mittelfeld-Boss Rodrigo „Rodri“ Hernández Cascante (28). Ohne den Strippenzieher im Zentrum geriet das Star-Ensemble ins Wanken. Die Folge: Titelverteidigung in der Liga war früh abgehakt und in der Champions League gab es das Aus im Play-off-Drama gegen Real Madrid.
Guardiola spricht von einer schwierigen Zeit – nicht nur sportlich, sondern auch menschlich: „Es ist viel schwieriger gewesen als in vergangenen Jahren, als wir um Titel gespielt haben. Es ist sehr viel herausfordernder auf der emotionalen Ebene, in der Vorbereitung, für die Stimmung, für alles.“
[–>Das Team um Ilkay Gündogan kämpft aktuell weiter um Konstanz – und um das Königsklassen-Ticket. Für City ist der Einzug in die Champions League längst kein Selbstläufer mehr.
Guardiola zieht ein ernüchterndes Fazit zur Saison: „Wir hatten keine Energie mehr. Und ich habe keinen Weg gefunden, dass die Spieler sich wieder wohlfühlen und Spiele gewinnen.“
Statt Triple-Träume also Frustbewältigung – und ein Trainer, der sich selbst ins Visier nimmt. Trotz geplatzter Titelträume sieht er dennoch Hoffnung für seine City-Stars. „Wir können immer noch die Champions League erreichen – was ein sehr großer Lohn wäre, und den FA-Cup gewinnen.“ Am 17. Mai wartet das FA-Cup-Finale in Wembley – gegen Crystal Palace! Eine letzte Chance, die Saison doch noch mit einem Titel zu krönen.
Guardiola holte mit Man-City sechs Meisterschaften, zwei Pokalsiege und den ersten Champions-League-Triumph der Vereinsgeschichte. Er wird alles dafür tun, um die Saison mit einem Erfolgserlebnis zu beenden.
Denn: Wer Guardiola kennt, weiß – Aufgeben ist keine Option.
