Shilo Sanders, the undrafted rookie safety out of Colorado and son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, made a significant impact on the first day of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ rookie minicamp.
Despite entering the NFL without the fanfare of a high draft pick, Sanders showcased his skills and determination, catching the attention of head coach Todd Bowles.

On his first day at the Buccaneers‘ rookie minicamp, Sanders demonstrated a blend of athleticism, intelligence, and work ethic that impressed both coaches and teammates.

His performance was particularly notable given the complexity of Bowles‘ defensive schemes, which often present a steep learning curve for newcomers.
Bowles has emphasized the importance of rookies grasping the defensive playbook quickly, stating, “You want to come in in shape. You want to do the right things. You want to show growth”.
Sanders’ ability to adapt to the defensive system and execute plays effectively on Day One indicated his readiness to contribute to the team. His performance not only highlighted his physical capabilities but also his mental acuity, aligning with Bowles‘ praise of the rookie class’s intelligence.
“Like the rest of the safeties, he’s very intelligent, he’s very loud. You can hear him making calls and everything so he’s got a good grasp of things day one, there was about three or four of them that did, he’s one of them,” Bowles said on Friday.
“But, you’ve got to make plays in pads obviously and that’s what it comes down to. Knowing what to do and then doing it consistently and constantly getting better every day.”
Building momentum for the future
While it’s early in the offseason, Sanders‘ strong start at rookie minicamp positions him as a player to watch in the upcoming training sessions.
His ability to absorb the defensive playbook and perform under pressure will be crucial as he competes for a spot on the Buccaneers’ roster.
