After Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round in the recent NFL Draft-despite being considered a first-round talent for a long time-it was leaked that one reason for his drop was a poor interview with the Giants, during which he failed to decipher a playbook.
This was reportedly one of the key reasons Sanders, son of Deion Sanders, was drafted as late as pick No. 144 by the Cleveland Browns on Day 3. Meanwhile, the Giants-who had been potential suitors for Sanders in the first round-chose instead to take Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Only time will tell if the Giants made the right decision passing on Sanders for Dart. What’s certain for now is that the former Ole Miss QB has already had his first practices with New York and left a strong impression.
Brian Daboll praises Jaxson Dart
After the Giants selected Dart, head coach Brian Daboll immediately stated that Russell Wilson would begin training as the starting quarterback. However, fans have been excited by what Dart has shown in his early practices.
Is Shedeur Sanders the answer for the Cleveland Browns at QuarterBack?
Daboll shared his initial impressions of Dart following his first workout as a member of the New York Giants:
“No one was pressuring him. He did what he was supposed to do. He was prepared. He put in a lot of time and effort. I really appreciate the way he has embraced his professional role in such a short period of time. What we’ve asked him to do and how he’s handled the process as a young professional in that position is significant.”
Dart enters the NFL with plenty of NCAA experience, having played 45 games over four seasons. His 2024 season was especially productive, with 4,279 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, plus 495 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Daboll acknowledges that Dart has many qualities to compete with veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston but cautioned that it’s still early to draw conclusions:
“I think he has natural leadership qualities,” said Daboll. “The most important thing you usually try to accomplish in a rookie camp, at least in my experience, is getting to know the players.”
