Some decisions are not easy to make. But if you were the coach or owner of a team where you had Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning at your disposal and you had to bench one of them, cut another, and pick a starter, what would you do?
This situation put the former NFL quarterback in a bind. On the latest episode of “4th & 1 with Cam Newton,” the Carolina Panthers legend confronted the “start, bench, cut” game, but clarified that his decision depended on the situation.

“Game on the line…Tom Brady. Patrick Mahomes, I’m benching. Then, I’m cutting Peyton. Statistics wise, starting Peyton Manning, because he has some of the most untouchable statistics in NFL history,” he began by analyzing.
Based on the statistics, Newton gave his verdict: “I’m starting Peyton Manning, benching Patrick Mahomes, and then cutting Tom Brady, if we’re only talking statistics”.

However, Peggy, his co-host demanded a final and complete answer to this question, after the 2015 regular season MVP rambled between different options and scenarios. With no more alternatives, Cam finally responded:
I’m going with Brady, bro. I’m going with Brady. Patrick Mahomes, and then I’m going to cut [Manning.]
Based on his winning vision, Newton’s choice was probably influenced by the number of times these players hoisted the Vince Lombardi.
Peyton won 2 Super Bowl rings in XLI with the Indianapolis Colts and L with the Denver Broncos. For his part, Patrick Mahomes has won three rings with the Kansas City Chiefs, in 2018, 2022 and 2023. The quarterback who has the most is Tom Brady, with 7, resulting winner in the XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, XLIX, LI, LIII, LV editions. This would have tipped the scales in Brady’s favor over Manning.
Looking ahead
With Playoff qualification as the primary goal, Cam Newton took on the “start, bench, cut” format with the next generation of quarterbacks – Jordan Love, Justin Herbert and Kyler Murray.
“Starting Jordan Love, benching Herbert, cutting Kyler Murray,” Cam began.
Again thinking about what the players have shown and their ability to win, Newton went on to analyze, “Kyler Murray is the only one that don’t got no playoff wins. Even though all of them probably don’t have all of the playoff success, Jordan Love did go into Dallas two years ago and wreck shop. Justin Herbert was one and done. That’s all I’m going off of,” he finished.
