On a night to forget, Inter Miami were crushed 4-1 by Minnesota United on MLS Matchday 12. Not even Lionel Messi’s goal could save the team from a painful defeat that exposed their weaknesses and set off alarm bells for the future, especially for coach Javier Mascherano.
In an unusual match, Miami were largely outplayed by a Minnesota United side that controlled the game from the outset against an opponent that offered little resistance. The win keeps Minnesota in second place in the Western Conference with 22 points, four behind leaders Vancouver.

Minnesota United struck first and hard, with goals from Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Anthony Markanich before half-time.
Lionel Messi responded with a moment of genius early in the second half, assisted by his old friend Jordi Alba, but his effort was a flash in the pan in a game the home side completely controlled.
And then chaos ensued! In the 68th minute, Marcelo Weigandt scored an own goal that sent Inter reeling. Barely two minutes later, Robin Lod delivered another deadly blow, taking advantage of a defense in complete disarray. Inter’s defense, disorganized and vulnerable, collapsed in a series of blunders, showing no reaction and exposing defensive weaknesses that screamed lack of coordination.
Fans call for Javier Mascherano to go
After Inter Miami‘s humiliating defeat, the team’s loyal fans have pointed the finger at the culprit, and that would be Argentine coach Javier Mascherano.
“Get rid of Mascherano before the Club World Cup, you still have time.”
“Mascherano is the worst coach I’ve ever seen, he ruins everything he touches. Thank you for ruining Messi’s last years in this sport.”
“Sack the coach and sign new defenders. You dishonor Messi every day! What the hell!.”

For his part, the Argentine coach took responsibility for the team’s recent poor results at a press conference.
“When the players’ performance drops, it’s clearly my responsibility, all mine. That’s clear. At the end of the day, there’s a coach and if the coach doesn’t convince them or doesn’t give them what they want, it’s the coach’s responsibility,” said Javier.
