How Logan Thompson is dominating the NHL playoffs with smart reads and ‘nth degree’ competitiveness

A long time ago, 12-year-old Logan Thompson was battling shooters inside the East Calgary Twin Arenas ice rink.Even at a young age, the competitive streak in the Washington Capitals’ star goaltender was evident. Because of that, Thompson was a huge fan of the game of “rebound,” which pits the goalie against anywhere between five and seven shooters.AdvertisementThe shooters take turns firing pucks from the top of the slot while the others circle the crease hunting for rebounds. If the goalie can make the save and freeze the puck or deflect it beyond the goal line, he earns a point. If the army of shooters can get the puck into the net, they earn a point. It can be a brutally taxing game for the goalie, who is always outnumbered, but Thompson loved it. He would play it all night if the […]

How long can the Houston Astros stay so right-handed?

HOUSTON — Before beginning a three-game series against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park, the Cincinnati Reds altered their starting rotation. Probables issued by both teams on Friday afternoon listed left-hander Andrew Abbott as Sunday’s starter.Replacing Abbott with rookie right-hander Chase Petty may have been in response to Hunter Greene’s groin injury and maintaining Petty’s routine, but Abbott still could’ve started the series finale on full rest.Advertisement“We for sure thought we were going to see Abbott,” Houston first baseman Christian Walker said. “They’re willing to tinker with their rotation to avoid throwing a righty. I think it’s a compliment.”Skipping Abbott was a sensible decision and accentuated a flaw of the Houston Astros’ floundering offense. Twelve of the team’s 14 active position players hit right-handed. The two that don’t are backup catchers, creating a lineup devoid of dimensions and difficult to […]

How Max Verstappen is saving F1 2025 from one-team domination dullness

When McLaren’s Oscar Piastri crossed the finish line to win the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, only his teammate Lando Norris was in sight. The crowd at the Hard Rock Stadium had to wait an age in Formula One terms for anything other than an MCL39 to round the track’s final corners. The gap from Piastri to Mercedes driver George Russell in third place was 37.6 seconds — the biggest winning margin between two teams since the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix (38.6 seconds).AdvertisementThat year, Red Bull won by more than 20 seconds eight times, as it swept to 21 victories in 22 grand prix races — a record-breaking 95.5 percent conversion rate. In 2025, with Piastri’s Miami triumph, McLaren now has five wins in six races. Russell has already predicted McLaren should convert a similar win total to Red Bull’s best season, […]

Twins’ first-quarter MVPs? Byron Buxton and Harrison Bader, the catch-everything outfield duo

MINNEAPOLIS — In each of the past three offseasons, the Minnesota Twins have acquired a speedy, right-handed-hitting veteran outfielder with a sterling defensive reputation to serve as Byron Buxton injury insurance in center field and boost depth in the corner spots. It worked brilliantly in 2023, when the Twins made a January trade with the Kansas City Royals for Gold Glove Award-winning center fielder Michael A. Taylor, who was pressed into extended duty when Buxton’s knee injury limited him to designated hitter before eventually requiring surgery.AdvertisementTaylor started 110 games in center field, playing spectacular, Buxton-caliber defense, stealing 13 bases in 14 tries and popping 21 homers at the bottom of the lineup. He rose from an inexpensive depth piece to one of the Twins’ top all-around players, filling an essential role.It worked horribly in 2024, when the Twins made a February […]

The Red Sox should just let Rafael Devers DH and figure out the rest themselves

The Boston Red Sox were perfectly justified in asking Rafael Devers to vacate third base for Alex Bregman and become a designated hitter. They are far less justified in asking Devers to switch again and, this time, play first base. It’s not Devers’ fault the Red Sox were negligent in finding an alternative for first baseman Triston Casas, who missed nearly four months in 2024 with a strained left rib cage and is out for the rest of 2025 with a ruptured left patella tendon.AdvertisementAnd heaven knows it would not be easy for Devers to transition to first base, a position that is nuanced and difficult to master. In theory, the move would make sense, providing an offensive upgrade over the current mishmash at first and clearing the DH spot for Masataka Yoshida, whose uncertain fit on the roster once he returns […]
