Von der eigenen Leistung war Pep Guardiola (54) in dieser Saison selten beeindruckt. Von der eines deutschen Kollegen ist er es aber sehr. Dabei kennt ihn hier kaum jemand.
Guardiola: „Ich bin sehr stolz. Ich gratuliere ihm natürlich für die unglaubliche Arbeit. Ich denke, dass die Spieler viel besser sind, als sie es vielleicht vor einer, zwei oder drei Saisons waren.“
[–>Wen meint der Spanier? Oliver Reiß (42). Seit dem vergangenen Sommer trainiert er die U18 von Manchester City. Von den 30 Spielen, die er seitdem an der Seitenlinie stand, gewann sein Team starke 26 – alle in Folge! Dabei schoss die U18 von Man City 110 (!) Tore, nur 25 kassierten sie.
Guardiola über das gesamte Trainerteam der jungen Mannschaft: „Sie entwickeln viele Dinge, die notwendig sind, um auf höchstem Niveau mithalten zu können. Sie machen einen unglaublichen Job.“

Dabei war sich Reiß zunächst nicht sicher. Nach seinem Wechsel von Hertha BSC, wo er diverse Jugendmannschaften betreute, nach England erklärte er gegenüber dem „Manchester Evening News“: „Als ich zu Manchester City kam, dachte ich am Anfang: ‚War es die richtige Entscheidung?‘ Sie erwarteten eine Menge von mir.“
Und: „Am Anfang gab es Herausforderungen, auch die Sprache und die Anpassung an die neue Kultur. Schon in den ersten Spielen an der Seitenlinie spürte ich, dass ich nicht mehr derselbe war.“

Bereits vor wenigen Wochen gewann Reiß mit der U18 den Premier-League-North-Titel. Der Coach: „Ich bin sehr dankbar für diese Leistung der Mannschaft und auch meines Teams. Ich denke, wir haben einen großartigen Job gemacht und vor allem die Spieler haben heute einen sehr guten Job gemacht.“
Weniger rund lief es dagegen in dieser Saison bei den Profis. Guardiola und sein Team stehen in der Premier League mit 18 Punkten Rückstand auf Meister Liverpool aktuell auf Rang 4, am Wochenende gab’s beim Tabellen-Letzten FC Southampton ein 0:0.
