After weeks of speculation and mounting pressure from fans, UFC CEODana White finally confirmed what many had hoped for, Ilia Topuria will face Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 317 on June 28, headlining International Fight Week in Las Vegas. White made the announcement during a surprise Instagram Live session, ending weeks of uncertainty and delivering a title fight worthy of the spotlight.
The bout will be for the vacant UFC lightweight championship, following Islam Makhachev’s decision to move up to welterweight to challenge Jack Della Maddalena later this year.
That shift in divisions officially removes Makhachev from the lightweight picture, opening the door for a new king at 155.

For Ilia Topuria, this is the moment he’s been waiting for. After vacating his featherweight title earlier this year, Topuria made it clear he would only fight again if it meant a shot at lightweight gold. “No tune-ups,” he told Joe Rogan. “Only gold.” Now, the undefeated Spanish-Georgian striker gets his chance against one of the division’s most dangerous finishers.
Charles Oliveira, the UFC’s all-time leader in finishes, is no stranger to championship fights. His dominant win over Michael Chandler proved he can thrive under pressure, and his social media activity in recent weeks had hinted at an imminent return. A fight card packed with heat
In addition to the headliner, White also revealed the full UFC 317 fight card, featuring several pivotal summer matchups. While the full details are still under wraps, it’s clear the promotion is stacking the deck for one of the most anticipated events of the year.
This main event, though, is the clear centerpiece. A classic striker-vs-submission artist matchup with gold on the line, Topuria vs. Oliveira promises fireworks and a definitive new chapter for the UFC’s lightweight division.
As the countdown to June 28 begins, all eyes are now on Las Vegas, and on two men ready to seize the moment.
