Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton fit for FA Cup final against Manchester City – Oliver Glasner

Crystal Palace will have an almost full squad available to them for the FA Cup final after Adam Wharton came through a week of training unscathed.

The midfielder twisted his ankle in Palace’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on May 5, leaving concerns that he might not be fit for Saturday’s Wembley showpiece against Manchester City after he was substituted just after an hour.

“I spoke to him. He’s a little bit sore,” manager Oliver Glasner said after the game. “He twisted his ankle a little bit.

“I hope that it’s not that serious. It looks like it’s not that serious. It (the substitution) was more of a precaution.”

Wharton subsequently missed Sunday’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur but he has been given the all clear to play against City after training this week, in what will be a major boost for Palace.

“It’s positive team news,” Glasner said in his pre-final press conference. “Everyone is fit.

“Adam trained the whole week and is available, and all the others are fit. There are some tough decisions to take – but good decisions.”

Wharton has been instrumental for Palace since arriving from Blackburn Rovers in January last year, but has suffered a stop-start season due to a groin injury picked up during England’s Euro 2024 campaign.

He managed that problem until Palace’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup fourth round, when he was forced off and the decision was taken for him to undergo surgery.

The 21-year-old returned in February’s 2-0 win over Manchester United, coming off the bench for the final two minutes, before gradually building up his fitness to start a 4-1 win over Villa at the end of that month.

He started eight of the last nine games before that ankle problem ruled him out against Spurs, but has recovered sufficiently for the final. Long-term absentees Cheick Doucoure and Chadi Riad remain unavailable.
