Das musste man beim Deutschen Handballbund (DHB) erst mal sacken lassen.
Donnerstagabend wurden die Vorrunden-Gruppen der Handball-Europameisterschaft 2026 (vom 15. Januar bis 1. Februar in Dänemark, Norwegen und Schweden) ausgelost.
Eines ist jetzt schon klar: Auf die Mannschaft von Bundestrainer Alfred Gislason (65) kommen geballte Anforderungen zu.

Das wird die schwerste Handball-EM aller Zeiten
Zumindest für den DHB in der nun vorliegenden Konstellation. Gegner in Vorrundengruppe A (Spielort Herning/Dänemark) sind Österreich, Serbien und Spanien. Die beiden Gruppenersten kommen weiter, die Punkte aus den jeweils direkten Vergleichen machen die Reise in die Hauptrundengruppe 1 mit. Dort droht noch viel mehr Ungemach.
Denn es treffen die Mannschaften aus den Gruppen A, B und C aufeinander. Theoretisch wären dann zum Beispiel Dänemark, Portugal, Frankreich und Norwegen die nächsten Kontrahenten in einer Sechsergruppe, aus der die beiden Ersten ins Halbfinale einziehen.
„Das ist eine Hammergruppe geworden“, sagt Kapitän Johannes Golla über die Vorrunden-Konstellation. „Wir kennen alle Gegner, haben gegen alle gute, aber auch schwierige Erfahrungen gemacht. Wir freuen uns auf das Turnier, weil eine EM immer mit unglaublich guten Mannschaften besetzt ist.“
[–>Golla weist damit auf den grundsätzlichen Unterschied zwischen Europa- und Weltmeisterschaften hin. Bei Weltmeisterschafts-Vorrunden spült es meistens zumindest einen Exoten in die einzelnen Gruppen. Also Gegner, gegen die Siege keine Herkules-Aufgabe darstellen. Bei Europameisterschaften gab es so gut wie noch nie absolut aussichtslose Exoten.
Handball-Europameisterschaften werden übrigens erst seit 1994 ausgespielt. Die Erste fand mit 12 Teilnehmern in Portugal statt, inzwischen sind es doppelt so viele Teilnehmer.
Rekordsieger mit fünf Titel-Gewinnen ist Schweden, aktueller Titelträger ist Frankreich. Deutschland wurde bisher zwei Mal Europameister, 2004 in Slowenien und 2016 in Polen.
