La noticia ya es oficial: Jonas Vingegaard, bicampeón del Tour de Francia y uno de los grandes referentes del ciclismo mundial, competirá por primera vez en su carrera en el Campeonato del Mundo de ruta. Será en Ruanda, el próximo 28 de septiembre, cuando el danés vista por primera vez la elástica roja y blanca de su país en una cita de esta magnitud.
Durante años se le ha reprochado a Vingegaard su escasa participación a lo largo del calendario, siempre centrado en preparar meticulosamente la Grande Boucle. A diferencia de su gran rival, Tadej Pogacar, el líder del Visma-Lease a Bike ha renunciado hasta ahora a representar a Dinamarca en grandes campeonatos como el Mundial, los Juegos Olímpicos o el Europeo. Sin embargo, el técnico nacional danés, Michael Mørkøv, ha confirmado en DR Sporten que ese patrón cambiará esta temporada: “La lista oficial no se ha publicado, pero puedo confirmar que Jonas quiere correr el Mundial. Por su nivel, es evidente que formará parte del equipo”.
Será, por tanto, su debut absoluto en un Mundial élite, tras su última aparición con el combinado nacional en el campeonato sub-23 de 2018. Y lo hará en un escenario inédito, tan exótico como exigente: Kigali, capital de Ruanda, con una prueba de 267,5 kilómetros y 5.475 metros de desnivel acumulado. El recorrido, con 15 vueltas a un trazado local y una durísima extensión de 42,5 km con paso por el temido Mont Kigali, ha sido definido por muchos como uno de los más duros de la historia reciente del evento.
Para Mørkøv, el perfil favorece a sus dos grandes talentos: “Es un trazado muy montañoso, sin subidas largas, pero disputado a unos 1.500 metros de altitud, lo que complica la oxigenación. Jonas ha demostrado ser especialmente fuerte en estas condiciones”, argumenta el seleccionador. Además de Vingegaard, Dinamarca contará con otra joya de la escalada, Mattias Skjelmose, quien ya ha anunciado su compromiso con el equipo nacional y su disposición a trabajar para su compatriota.
La participación de Jonas responde también a un cambio de mentalidad en el ciclista de 28 años. Según Mørkøv, “es el momento natural para que represente a su país. Como seleccionador, mi objetivo es hacer atractivo el hecho de correr con Dinamarca, y tener a nuestras grandes figuras motivadas es un paso adelante”.
Mirando al futuro
En una temporada marcada nuevamente por su objetivo de conquistar el Tour de Francia en julio, la incursión en el Mundial añade un reto mayúsculo al calendario del escalador danés. Ruanda, país que acogerá por primera vez unos Campeonatos del Mundo, ha diseñado un circuito brutal, con el aval de la UCI y la expectación general del pelotón. Será también una de las pocas oportunidades de ver a los dos gigantes contemporáneos del ciclismo, Vingegaard y Pogacar, batirse sin el corsé de los equipos y bajo los colores de sus banderas.
Queda por ver si el danés puede añadir el arcoíris a su ya legendario palmarés, pero lo que está claro es que su presencia en Kigali eleva automáticamente el estatus de este Mundial. Y, como dijo Mørkøv, “ver a Jonas en el podio con la camiseta de Dinamarca sería un orgullo para todo el país”.
