Die Ärzte versetzen ihn nach dem Eingriff sogar ins künstliche Koma.
Nottingham-Trainer Nuno Espírito Santo (51) über die Situation: „Es war sehr schwierig, weil die Verletzung und die Situation, die er durchgemacht hat, uns Sorgen bereitet haben. Aber es sieht besser aus.“
Awoniyi jetzt, nur wenige Tage nach dem schlimmen Unfall: „Ich kann es kaum erwarten, wieder mit den Jungs das zu tun, was ich liebe.“

Awoniyi kam im Sommer 2022 von Union Berlin nach England. In der vergangenen Saison absolvierte er in der Premier League 26 Spiele, dreimal stand er dabei nur in der Startelf. Sein einziges Saison-Tor in der Liga erzielte er bei Wolverhampton (3:0). In 85 Spielen für Nottingham erzielte er bisher insgesamt 19 Treffer.
