With Steph Curry sidelined due to a hamstring injury in the second round of the NBA playoffs, the Golden State Warriors dropped four straight to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jimmy Butler struggled to adapt without Curry, and Dwyane Wade said he was too timid as the series slipped away.
In the final two games of the series, Butler scored a combined 31 points while attempting just 20 shots from the field. In addition to his lack of scoring, Butler also posted a minus-47.
On the latest episode of his “Time Out with Dwyane Wade” podcast, Wade criticized Butler for not attacking the basket more often and said that has been a problem for him in the past too.
“I didn’t like the way he approached the game,” said Wade, who played with Butler on the Chicago Bulls in 2016-17. “I know Jimmy is a pass-first guy. I know he’s about getting his teammates the ball and wanting to see them shine. But it’s a point where … this ain’t working. He won’t go. He won’t look at the basket. I’ve seen this before. I’ve seen it in a Heat jersey.”
Wade then implied that one of the reasons Heat president Pat Riley didn’t want to extend Butler was due to his performance in big moments.
“When Pat comes out and says, ‘We won’t give you an extension,’ it’s not always because of injury,” Wade said. “Sometimes it’s because we need to see what you’re gonna do in every moment, not just in one moment.

While Wade did acknowledge that Butler was a “dog” in the 2020 NBA Playoffs, he added that Butler was too passive in the 2023 Finals against the Denver Nuggets.
“I saw Jimmy in another Finals too, against the Denver Nuggets, and he did the exact same thing he did the other night,” Wade said. “He did not look at the basket. I don’t wanna see that.”
Butler will get another shot to make his mark with the Warriors next season. He signed a two-year contract extension following the trade that sent him to Golden State.
