The Philadelphia Eagles are not standing idly by in the face of the impending vote among NFL owners to ban the “tush push” play.
According to information provided by The Athletic, the team is actively calling on other franchises to campaign for their iconic play to remain legal in the NFL.

Their effort follows the lead of the Green Bay Packers. In a March proposal, the Packers introduced a possible rule change that would prohibit any offensive player from pushing another from behind after receiving the snap, which includes the “tush push” play.
Under the Packers’ proposal, the offense would be penalized 10 yards for a pushing infraction.
The Packers cited player safety and the pace of play as justification for banning the play, which is known as the “tush push“, after the Eagles began to run it more frequently during the 2022 season.
Philadelphia ranked in the top 10 in fourth-down conversions and in the top five in conversion percentage in each of the last three seasons, driven largely by the “tush push”. Last year, the Eagles got more than 70% of their conversions, which translates to being the fourth-best mark in the NFL.
The league’s owners postponed the vote last month, but an informal vote indicated that teams were split 16-16 on the issue. Banning the play would require 24 teams to vote in favor of the Packers’ rule proposal. Team owners are expected to meet in Minneapolis on Wednesday and Thursday to vote on various issues.
“There are certainly those that have concerns about health and safety, but there are also those that have concerns about football, and that’s what was discussed in the room,” said Rich McKay, chairman of the NFL’s competition committee, last month.
“So I wouldn’t say it was down to any particular video or discussion about health and safety. It was much more about the play, about its aesthetics: ‘Is it part of what has traditionally been American football or is it more of a rugby play?’ All that kind of discussion.”
Commanders suffered firsthand from the use of this play
The Washington Commanders linebacker, Frankie Luvu, in an appearance on “NFL Network’s Good Morning Football“, said the league’s owners should ban the “tush push”, calling it “a cheap play”.
“That’s pretty much a scrum in rugby,” Luvu said. “That’s how I see it. And we also have to have a scrum, on the other side. And the scrum is about having a cadence where we all go at once. It’s not like counting blindly and this and that, where now you make us, or me, jump over the pile thinking you’re going to center the ball. That’s just my personal opinion, and I’m going to leave it there.”
Luvu was infamously penalized on three consecutive plays in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship Game after diving over the line of scrimmage before the snap to try to stop the push. Other players jumped ahead of the ensuing play.
After the third penalty, referee Shawn Hochuli announced that the Commanders were informed that they could be awarded a touchdown if those actions continued. Although Washington did not go offside on the next play, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts scored a touchdown on his own.
