In a powerful academic essay for Yale University’s Global Health Review,Violet Affleck, the daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, offered a personal and political testimony on the climate crisis, in which she recounted a tense moment with her mother as wildfires consumed their community in Los Angeles.

The 19-year-old, a current freshman at Yale, titled her paper “A Chronically Ill Earth: COVID Organizing as a Model Climate Response in Los Angeles.” In it, she describes how the fire forced her family to leave their Palisades home and take refuge in a hotel, where an argument broke out with Garner over climate change.

“I spent January’s fires in Los Angeles arguing with my mother in a hotel room,” Violet wrote. The 13 Going on 30 actress, according to her daughter, was “shocked, awed by the magnitude of the destruction in the neighborhood where she raised my siblings and me,” which surprised Violet. “My question was not if the Palisades would burn, but when.”

Violet Affleck criticizes adults’ reaction to fires

The young activist made it clear that her generation – especially those who grew up in California – sees the climate crisis as inevitable, not as an unfortunate accident. Violet criticized the way the adults in the hotel talked about the situation: rebuilding, costs, losses. “The crisis was acute, a flurry of bad luck. A combination of strong winds and scant rain,” she observed.

Violet’s reflection goes beyond her personal experience. She directly accuses the consumption patterns of the richest people as drivers of climate disaster. “It is anthropogenic,” she wrote. “Driven by unsustainable consumption patterns concentrated among the wealthiest citizens of the wealthiest countries, who have already subjected most of the country and the world to deadly temperatures, fire and flood cycles, rising seas and dying crops.”

Violet also mentioned her younger brother, Samuel, who questioned the relationship between climate change and wind speed. She responded bluntly in her text: “I wish most of us understood the climate crisis better than my little brother.”

The essay concludes with a proposal: to apply the community organizing methods used during the COVID-19 pandemic to responses to climate disasters. Violet highlights the resilience of COVID-conscious communities and people with disabilities, suggesting that their approaches could guide new public policy in future crises.

Before enrolling at Yale, Violet had already shown signs of her social commitment. In July 2024, she spoke before the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, asking them to maintain mask mandates in hospitals, sharing her experience with viral illnesses and advocating for vulnerable communities.

With this essay, Violet Affleck positions herself as a critical and generational voice in the face of a crisis that can no longer be ignored, even within the privileged walls of Hollywood.
