Ecuadorian athlete David Patricio Factos Lopez, 29, was found dead in a 700-meter-deep ravine in the Los Illinizas Ecological Reserve, in the La Virgen sector, within the Latacunga canton. Factos had disappeared on Sunday, May 18 while participating in a demanding high mountain trail running race. His trail was lost during the race when he failed to cross the finish line despite having started with the rest of the runners from El Chaupi.
After more than 48 hours of searching, in which firefighters from Latacunga, Mejia and Quito, as well as military personnel, police and volunteers participated, the worst outcome was confirmed. “With deep regret we inform the public that the body of the outstanding sportsman David Patricio Factos Lopez has been found lifeless,” said the Latacunga Fire Department in a statement.

Factos, an active military man and a great fan of trail running, had recently competed in El Altar, in Chimborazo, where he was second in the open category. He was known for his passion for the mountains and for sharing his experiences on social networks. The area where he was found had adverse weather conditions and extremely rugged terrain, which made it difficult to locate him and later recover the body.
