Wenn alles gut geht, behält die Daikin Handball-Bundesliga einen unfassbar guten Linkshänder.

Seit Dezember 2023 hatte Kay Smits immer wieder Probleme mit dem wichtigsten Muskel seines Körpers. Beim niederländischen Nationalspieler wurde eine Myokarditis (Herzmuskelentzündung) diagnostiziert, wegen der er zweimal lange Pausen einlegen musste. Jetzt scheint sich für Smits, der noch bis 30. Juni bei der SG Flensburg-Handewitt unter Vertrag steht, alles zum Guten zu wenden.

Neuer Job für herzkranken Handball-Star

Nach Informationen von SPORT BILD steht bei Smits in der kommenden Woche ein wichtiger Termin an. Der Linkshänder muss zu einem Herz-Check, bei hoffentlich erfolgreichem Ergebnis stünde seinem Wechsel zum VfL Gummersbach nichts mehr im Wege.

Beim Altmeister laufen die Personalplanungen, nach eingehenden Analysen wurde die Position im halbrechten Rückraum als Schwachstelle identifiziert. Für die stehen der Georgier Giorgi Tskhovrebadze (24) und der Isländer Teitur Einarsson (26) im Kader, mit den Vorstellungen der beiden ist der VfL nicht zufrieden.

„Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass wir in dieser Saison auf Rückraum rechts nicht unbedingt unsere ganz große Stärke hatten“, sagte Gummersbachs Geschäftsführer Christoph Schindler (41) zuletzt am Dyn-Mikro.

[–>Auf die Frage nach Kay Smits, der mit dem VfL in Verbindung gebracht wurde, antwortete Schindler: „Kay Smits ist ein super Spieler, der gerade leider keinen Handball spielen kann. Ich bin mir aber sicher, dass er es in Zukunft auch noch ziemlich erfolgreich tun wird. Wo, wird man dann sehen.“

Smits soll nicht der einzige neue Rückraum-Linkshänder für Gummersbach werden. Der VfL steht kurz davor, den portugiesischen Nationalspieler Joao Gomes (22) von Sporting Lissabon zu verpflichten. Für Tskhovrebadze (Vertrag bis 2027) und Einarsson (Vertrag bis 2026) werden hingegen neue Arbeitgeber gesucht.
