Prince William and Princess Kate brought their signature mix of charm and competition to Glasgow on May 22, attending the official naming ceremony of the Royal Navy’s new HMS Glasgow.
Known in Scotland as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, the royal couple combined ceremonial duties with lighthearted fun, highlighting both their commitment to service and their spirited relationship.

As the ship’s official sponsor, Princess Kate performed the traditional christening by pressing a button to smash a bottle of whisky against the hull. The exclusive single malt was produced by Clydeside Distillery, with sales supporting Place2Be – a children’s mental health charity and one of Kate’s patronages.
“May God bless her and all who sail on her,” the Princess declared, marking the formal launch of the ship, the first of eight Type 26 anti-submarine frigates being built in the city.

After the formalities, the royal couple boarded the ship to meet apprentices from BAE Systems – the company responsible for building the vessel. The event quickly took a lighthearted turn as William and Kate were invited to join the young engineers in a pipe-building activity.
Kate dived in with enthusiasm, assembling her structure swiftly while William, more focused on conversation than construction, joked afterward that he hadn’t realized it was a competition.
“I didn’t know it was a race!” he laughed.
It seemed Kate had clinched the win-until, in a twist of fate, a part of her pipe creation collapsed just as victory was being declared. Trying to stay composed, she burst into laughter as William chuckled from across the table and teased.
“Perfectly timed!”
The couple’s playful rivalry has become a familiar sight during public outings. From cocktail-making to sailing races, William and Kate often find ways to turn engagements into good-natured showdowns.
During a 2023 appearance on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast, hosted by William’s cousin’s husband Mike Tindall, Kate’s competitive side was playfully exposed.
“I’m not going to say you’re uber competitive,” Tindall joked, nodding knowingly. Kate smirked and replied.
“I’m not competitive at all.”
Tindall responded with a laugh: “I’ve seen her play beer pong!”
The event wasn’t without other candid moments. As the royals greeted well-wishers, one fan called out, “You’re beautiful,” to Princess Kate, before quickly adding, “You too, William!” Ever quick with a comeback, the Prince smiled and said, “You don’t have to say that. Don’t worry,” sending ripples of laughter through the crowd.
While the HMS Glasgow naming marked a significant moment for the Royal Navy, it also served as another glimpse into the royal couple’s relatable chemistry-one that continues to resonate with the public both in the U.K. and around the world.
